Cameroon presents many business opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
With an installed capacity of around 1,400 MW (for a hydroelectric potential estimated at 12,000 MW) and a population of over 25 million, Cameroon urgently needs to double its electricity production capacity to meet demand from households and industries. Only 60% of the current network (over 32,000 km of transmission and distribution) would be in normal operating condition, which explains losses of around 30% on the network. The average electrification rate of 60% hides strong disparities between the major urban centers (80%) and rural areas (20%). Demand is growing by 8% on average per year.
For several years now, the country has had a Long-term Development Plan for the Electricity Sector (PDSE 2030) which aims to promote an electricity supply at a lower cost, and which will have to make an important part of renewable energies for around 25% compared to 1% in 2019 (excluding hydroelectricity).
The Canadian Trade Commissioners Service, in collaboration with the Cameroonian Ministry of Water and Energy, is organizing a virtual information meeting with the Minister of Water and Energy, which will provide an exhaustive presentation of this with high potential market.
