The Town has been approved for a rebate that will cover costs of four electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

The Town of Black Diamond has successfully applied for funding to cover the costs of four electric vehicle charging stations to be installed in the town.

“We qualify for $160,000, so that will give us four EV (electric vehicle) charging stations,” CAO Sharlene Brown told council members at their meeting on May 18.

Brown said the rebate program is expected to cover the entire cost of the chargers.

Users will pay to charge their vehicles by swiping or tapping a card, she said.

One fast charger, capable of charging in 30 minutes, will be located at the Oilfields Regional Arena, which already has the electrical infrastructure to support it, with no additional upgrades needed.

A dual charger, able to charge two vehicles at once, will be located at the park-and-ride lot on the west side of town near the Sheep River, and two single chargers will be located at the town office. These chargers will be capable of charging over several hours.

Brown said that much thought went into determining locations for the chargers, and took into account existing electrical capacity as well as benefit to the town.

“The electrical capacity at the parking lot can only support one charging station, but it will be a dual charger,” she said. “You can have two cars with one charging station.”
