Fuelling the future: Strathcona County partners to explore hydrogen for local fleets

Strathcona County is proud to be a partner in the Alberta Zero-Emissions Fleet Fueling (AZEFF) project, a clean energy initiative funded through Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA). This groundbreaking project supports Edmonton region municipalities to test new technology and explore hydrogen as a sustainable fuel source for heavy-duty municipal fleets.

In partnership with the City of Edmonton, Strathcona County is playing a pivotal role in the development of a mobile hydrogen fuelling station. With an investment of up to $350,000 in capital and in-kind contributions, the County is helping to ensure that essential fleet vehicles—such as transit buses and heavy-duty trucks—have reliable, on-site access to hydrogen fuel. The first mobile hydrogen fuelling station will begin operations in Edmonton this spring.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for us to learn alongside our municipal and industry partners,” shares Strathcona County’s Chief Commissioner, Stacy Fedechko. “Through this project, we’ll gain valuable insights into how hydrogen fuel cell vehicles perform compared to battery electric vehicles, especially in Alberta's extreme weather conditions.”
