Helping workers and communities thrive in a net-zero carbon economy
Climate change is happening now, changing our communities and forcing us to change and adapt with it. The need to transition to a cleaner economy is urgent, and the need for a prosperous economy is always there. The future success of our economy hinges on our ability to compete in an increasingly green, low-carbon global economy. We want to work with partners to ensure a just transition for all Canadians and to be successful in transforming to a low-carbon future.
Just transition is an approach to economic, environmental and social policy that aims to create an equitable and prosperous future for workers and communities as the world builds a low-carbon economy. No worker or community can be left behind, so government climate action must be focused on those workers.
We cannot reach net zero without the participation, know-how and innovative ideas of all Canadians.
Let’s Talk
Taking action now to combat climate change will not only help us achieve net-zero emissions, it will make our economy stronger and more competitive. This will allow us to take advantage of new markets, new supply chains and new opportunities for economic growth and job creation, for the benefit of all Canadians.
We want to hear your views on:
People-centred just transition principles that put workers and communities at the centre of the government’s policy and decision-making processes on climate change action.
A Just Transition Advisory Body to provide the government with advice on regional and sectoral just transition strategies that support workers and communities.
Other aspects related to just transition – what’s working, what isn’t, and how do we move forward in advancing equity, diversity and inclusion as we move toward a low-carbon economy?
Canadians expect the government to make the net-zero transition just and equitable for everyone. We have heard from stakeholders and partners that one way of achieving this goal is through legislation that would protect and improve the well-being of workers and communities across the country.
How to participate
We want to hear from you! Send us your comments by email until September 30, 2021. Through the virtual sessions (by invitation), we will engage broadly with workers, communities, provinces and territories, Indigenous Peoples, businesses and stakeholders.
