Highlights of Alberta's Generation Sector

Capital Power submitted a Letter of Enquiry (AUC Proceeding 26457) requesting approval to construct and operate Phase 1 of the Genesee Carbon Conversion Centre (GC3). The facility will use carbon capture and utilization technology developed by C2CNT LLC to transform 10,000 tCO2e/year of waste carbon dioxide from Genesee Unit 3 into carbon nanotubes.

  • TC Energy, on behalf of Siemens Energy Canada Limited, submitted an application (AUC Proceeding 26478) to construct the 9.5MW Acme Generating Station waste heat to power facility at the Foothills Pipe Line (Alta.) Ltd.'s 363 compressor station, located 80 km northeast of Calgary. The facility will utilize supercritical CO2 cycle technology developed by Siemens in partnership with Echogen® Power Systems. The target completion date is February 15, 2023.

  • Amazon announced it will purchase green power from Greengate Power Corporation's 80MW solar project near Lathom, Newell County, approximately 150 km southeast of Calgary.

  • Jenner Wind 1 GP Inc., on behalf of Jenner 1 LP, submitted a Letter of Enquiry (AUC Proceeding 26464) to make minor alternations to its 122MW Jenner 1 wind farm, including moving the completion date from June 30, 2022 to December 31, 2023, changing to the 4.2MW Enercon E160 wind turbine, and reducing the number of turbines from 29 to 22.

  • Dunmore Solar Inc. submitted an application (AUC Proceeding 26485) for approval to construct and operate the 216 MWac solar farm located 13 km east of the City of Medicine Hat. The facility is expected to be on line by Q2 2023.

  • Bimbo Canada announced it has signed two 15 year virtual power purchase agreements of approximately 50 MW with Renewable Energy Systems ("RES") to offset 100% of its electrical consumption in Canada. RES will construct both a solar and wind facility totaling 170 MW in southern Alberta, expected to by operational by December, 2022.

  • Enerfin Energy Company of Canada Inc. submitted an application (AUC Proceeding 26504) to construct and operate the 122 MW Winnifred Wind Power Project, located 5.5 km north of Whitla. 32 MW of the facility is anticipated to connect as an AESO behind the fence project to be built concurrently with the remaining 90 MW. The facility is expected to be online by Q3 2021.

  • BluEarth announced it has entered into a 100MW power purchase agreement with Shell Energy for the 130MW Hand Hills Wind Project, located northeast of Drumheller, Alberta.

  • TransAlta, through its subsidiary Garden Plain I LP, submitted a Project Update and Time Extension application (AUC Proceeding 26499) to change to wind turbine of its 130 MW Garden Plain Wind Power Project to the 5 MW Siemens Gamesa Model 145, to reduce the number of wind turbines from 36 to 26, and to extend the completion date from January 31, 2022 to January 31, 2023.

  • The AESO held a Stakeholder Engagement Session for "Adjustments for Loads on the Margin" on April 13 and accepted feedback until April 30. The AESO will determine further consultation steps after considering the feedback.

  • Capital Power announced it has entered into a virtual power purchase agreement with Budweiser for 51% of the electricity generated for the 75MW Enchant Solar facility near Taber, Alberta.

  • Cypress Renewable Energy Centre GP Inc., on behalf of Cypress Renewable Energy Centre LP submitted a Letter of Enquiry (AUC Proceeding 26489) to increase the size of the wind farm from 201.6 MW to 248.4 MW by changing the wind turbine to the 5 MW Siemens-Gamesa SG Model 145.

  • BluEarth Renewables Inc. submitted an applications (AUC Proceeding 26496) to construct Wheatcrest Solar, an up to 60MW solar facility near the Municipal District of Taber. The facility is expected to be online by March 2023.
