Highlights of Alberta's Generation Sector

TC Energy applied (AUC Proceeding 26572) for approval to construct and operate the Saddlebrook Solar + Storage Power Plant and substation. The project will be located in the Saddlebrook Industrial Park within the community of Aldersyde. Phase 1 of the project will consist of 102.5 MW of solar generation and is to be completed by November 16, 2022. Phase two will include the installation of 6.5MW - 40 MWh of storage and will be completed by November 30, 2023.

  • The AESO published an update to the 2021 loss factors to be effective January 1, 2021. The update includes locations 0000042111 and 0000052611, which did not satisfy project inclusion criteria when the 2021 loss factors were first determined.

  • The AUC has initiated a consultation to standardize the distribution system connection process. Comments can be provided through the AUC's Standardization of Connection Process Engage page.

  • Renewable Energy Systems Canada Inc. applied (AUC Proceeding 26569) for approval to construct and operate the 100 MW Hilda Wind Power Project. The project is located 80 km northeast of the City of Medicine Hat, will consist of twenty 5 MW wind turbines, and is expected to be online by December 2022.

  • The AESO posted its Energy Storage Engagement and Progress Update. There are 12 storage projects currently in the connection queue. In addition, Fortis Alberta Buffalo Creek in connecting in 2021 and three projects, TransAlta Summerview II, ENMAX Crossfield, and ATCO Rycroft connected in 2020.

  • Deerland Power Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of Maxim Power Corp., submitted request (AUC Proceeding 26568) to extend the completion date of the 190 MW Deerland Peaking Power Plant and substation from May 31, 2021 to December 31, 2024. The project was first approved in 2008 (AUC Proceeding 36).

  • The AESO posted its Distributed Energy Resources Progress Update and next steps regarding Small DER Market Participation.

  • Lathom Solar LP, a wholly owned subsidiary of Greengate Power Corporation, applied (AUC Proceeding 26538) to construct the 120 MW Lathom Solar Project and substation approximately 15 km south east of the Town of Bassano. Last month Amazon announced it will purchase 80MW of green power from the project. The project is expected to be online by December 2022.

  • The AESO posted stakeholder comments from session one of the Adjustment for load on the margin initiative.

  • Enel Alberta Wind Inc., as general partner of Wild Run Limited Partnership, applied (AUC Proceeding 26533) to construct and operate the 154 MW Grizzly Bear Wind Power Project, located 6.4 km south of Mannville in the counties of Minburn No. 27 and Vermillion River. The project is expected to be online in Q4 2022.

  • Wheatland Wind Project LP submitted a Letter of Enquiry (AUC Proceeding 26564) to, among other things, change the wind turbine to the Siemens Gamesa SG 5.0 - 145 and delay the completion date two years to December 31, 2023. The project was originally approved in 2018 (AUC Proceeding 22643).
