Highlights of Alberta's Generation Sector

ATCO Power (2010) Ltd. submitted an application to the AUC (Proceeding 26892) to construct and operate the 37 MW Deerfoot Solar Project, located within the City of Calgary. The site has limited development potential as it is used to contain phosphogypsum, a byproduct of fertilizer production. The project is expected to be online by December of 2022.

  • The AESO is soliciting input from those who wish to present regarding the 2022 Budget Review Process at the AESO Board Meeting on November 17, 2021. Stakeholders can express their interest by emailing karen.campbell@aeso.com.

  • Saturn Power Inc. applied to the AUC (Proceeding 26893) to construct and operate its 20 MW Springbrook Solar Project located adjacent to the Red Deer Regional Airport in the Hamlet of Springbrook. The project will connect to the Fortis distribution system and is expected to be on line by June 15, 2023.

  • The AESO provided a quarterly update and presentation regarding its Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Roadmap. Installed DER capacity was 880 MW at the end of August, signifying an 18% growth since August of 2020.

  • Concord Drumheller GP2 Ltd. applied (AUC Proceeding 26901) for a time extenston from July to December 2022 for the completion of its Drumheller Solar Battery Storage project, a 13.5MW solar, 8MW/8MWh storage facility. The project was first permitted (AUC Proceeding 25234) in April 2020 by the Drumheller Solar Corporation and was transferred to Concord Drumheller GP2 Ltd. (AUC Proceeding 26383) in April of this year.

  • The AESO will host an information session on its Transmission System Projects, including CETO, CRPC, and the BC Intertie on October 27, 2021. Registration is available online.
