ERA Continues to Invest in Commercial Usage Development of Hydrogen

While using low-emissions hydrogen as a clean energy source is not a new concept, momentum for increased commercial usage is clearly building. From Canadian Pacific's hydrogen locomotive, the City of Edmonton commitment to hydrogen-powered buses, and the Alberta Motor Transport Association's plan to test hydrogen-fuelled semi-trucks, major advances are taking place in Alberta’s clean tech sector. And don’t forget Air Products plan to build the largest net-zero hydrogen plant in the world just outside of Edmonton. Once complete, this $1.6 billion facility is designed to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of hydrogen each year.

ERA has committed funding to all these projects from the Government of Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER Fund). In fact, since 2009, ERA has invested over $60 million in hydrogen technologies worth a collective total value of $1.7 billion. Combined, these projects will result in 4.7 million tonnes of CO2e reductions by 2030 and could lead to increased adoption of the technologies across Alberta, Canada, and the world.
