Town of Canmore

Canmore, a small town nestled in the Rocky Mountains, is no stranger to decentralised energy and climate action. The Town of Canmore has over one megawatt of solar photovoltaic generating capacity spread over four civic buildings, which provides around 10% of municipal electricity consumption. The Elevation Place recreation centre uses ground source cooling and the Town has offered an annual Solar Incentive Program to residents and businesses since 2014. A new firehall is being constructed which will be close to net zero, utilizing an air-source heat pump for space heating and domestic hot water heating, offset by solar PV.

In 2019, Council declared a State of Climate Emergency. The Town is a signatory to the federal Partners for Climate Protection Program and international Global Covenant of Mayors and is actively implementing its Climate Action Plan.
