The rapid rise of decentralized energy in most regions of the world is prompting a lot of pointed questions on how to accommodate, integrate, and standardize decentralized energy infrastructure. Innovation and standardization are not often seen as closely related, but the connections run deep.
The dynamic and apparently irrepressible decentralized energy industry is being welcomed in part because of its value in the ongoing energy transition and in implementing Net Zero energy solutions. It has produced a steady stream of new and innovative technology from microgrids to power walls, infrastructure that could figure prominently in future energy systems. The industry looks both creative and chaotic as bright minds from all corners of the globe work to reinvent how electricity is supplied to customers. Piggybacking off the existing grid, state-of-the-art hardware, local resources and each other, inventors are coming up with new ways to generate and manage power closer to the consumer, using the latest advances in electronics, interactivity, and energy efficiency.
As reported by the International Energy Agency, this burgeoning industry has already produced thousands of new patents, built countless new customer-connected installations, and helped to alleviate critical pressures on regional power grids - and it shows no sign of stopping.
