Community Energy
WHAT IS COMMUNITY ENERGY?
Community energy refers to the construction of distribution system-connected renewable or alternative energy generation in order to support community benefits such as increased investment, local job creation, and community energy resiliency.
Small Scale Generation Regulation
The Small Scale Generation Regulation (SSGR) is a regulatory framework established in Alberta in November 2018. The purpose of the regulation is to facilitate distribution-connected alternative and renewable generation sized to supply electricity to the grid. This is different than the current Microgeneration Regulation, which was established for projects that generate and consume electricity on-site.
Guidebook & Toolkit Purpose
As communities begin to generate electricity, there are important considerations for the long term. Engaging in a planning process that integrates discussion of key challenges that communities and their partners face, will help enable communities to establish high quality and relevant generation projects that respond to the needs of their communities.

What Happens if Regulations Change?
It is possible that Alberta will see some regulatory changes during the regulatory review process initiated by the Alberta Government. It is also likely that the Alberta Climate Leadership Plan will undergo revision. As regulatory, operational, and granting programs evolve it is certain that community projects will still retain a certain level of complexity that the guidebook and toolkit will support.
